Spirit of Steamboat A Walt Longmire Story Craig Johnson Books
It’s 1988 and a girl suffering from serious burns must be transported from Durant to Denver for treatment. There’s an old B-25 two engine prop job called Steamboat, a pilot who flew a plane like this in WWII, and a raging Wyoming winter storm. The pilot is none other than Lucian Connally, then sheriff of Absoroka County. Together with his deputy, Walt Longmire, and a woman pilot Lucian likes to call Toots, they undertake this hazardous mission to save the girl’s life. It’s an exciting and tension-filled story. It’s also ironic in the sense that the girl being flown to Denver is Japanese and this particular plane was part of Jimmy Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo back in 1942. There’s also an explanation of the plane’s name of Steamboat; it’s not the Colorado town but the name of a famous bronco who later becomes the emblem that adorns Wyoming’s license plates. And this old plane bucks and kicks like an ornery nag all the way.
There’s a bonus to this book, a short story at the end called Old Indian Trick. It’s not about Walt’s friend, Henry Standing Bear, but an older fellow named Lonnie Little Bird. Lonnie uses his Indian savvy to help Walt solve a crime in a record short time.

Spirit of Steamboat A Walt Longmire Story Craig Johnson Books Reviews
This Walt Longmire opus is positively riveting. Granted, it is a novella, but Craig packs it with thrills and chills to the very end. There is no let-up in the action. One expects a Christmas story to be filled with warm family reunions and remembrances, feasts, and presents. The Spirit of Steamboat, however, is filled with the gift of life and the lengths to which Walt, Lucien, and others go to protect it. A young woman seeks out Lucien, and Walt Longmire takes her to him. The story then flashes back to Christmas Eve 1988, when a child is critically burned and must be transported to Denver through the worst blizzard since 1949. The only aircraft available for a med-evac is a decrepit World War II B 25 with leaking hydraulics, uncertain gas gauges, and other malfunctioning equipment that a soused Lucien has to fly. Will its precious cargo make it to Denver?
It is a different kind of Christmas story--one filled with fear and pathos. A little girl may not see Christmas Day, and the band of angels sent to her rescue may not, either.
Craig's characters are three dimensional and complicated, taking on a life of their own. Even Lucien, the drunken old goat, losing his artificial leg after one drink too many, provides a needed tension level. The juxtaposition of the authorities who only know how to do things by the book with Lucien's "go Western" method of operating that gets things done keeps the band of rescuers at odds with the law. Going by the book, however, would have killed them all. I especially liked the CHP officer getting the load of snow dumped on him as the plane flew over and the hissy fit that the Denver airport officials threw when Lucien landed. Going "Western" worked.
The story flashes forward to the present. I highly recommend this very seasonal novella--another Craig Johnson winner. It is possibly one of his best yet.
What can I say? I love the Longmire books, their compelling stories, and their well-wrought characters, and now that I've followed them through so many adventures, we've bonded strongly.
This is actually a novella that the author says began as a short story. Walt Longmire and his former boss Lucian Connally take the lead role in this hair-raising adventure that involves a terrible accident with a young girl burned so badly she needs medical help from a far-away burn center. A dangerous winter storm is barreling in as Walt assesses the situation. As both time and options are running out, he's left with a WWII vintage airplane and only one person who knows how to fly it the hard-drinking, irascible Lucian.
Quick and enjoyable read out of normal vein of Longmire. Those of us that love Luciun will love this story since he is the star with just enough Walt and other main characters involved. Love the "one last time into the breech" feel the story has for both Lucian and the airplane (which maybe the most human part of the story). At first I was a little skeptical of the "short story" feel but it was really enjoyable once I started it. Its almost none stop action which really is a Johnson strength in writing compelling and super involving action "scenes".
